Stephen Girard

Stephen Girard was a naturalized American who was born in Bordeaux, France in 1750. Girard traveled to the United States at the age of 10. Much later in life he founded Girard Bank, which was the primary lender to the United States for the war 1812.  He became one of the wealthiest people in America having amassed a fortune in banking.  Girard bequeathed most of his money to the city of Philadelphia for the purpose of creating competent police department. As a result of Stephen’s donations, Philadelphia was able to create the nations first daytime police department in 1833, which led to New York City to follow suit 1844.
