This is a first for me, hosting my own blog. When I first started blogging my work was on Blogger. We had a great relationship. The server posted my stuff and I loyally followed. There was very little commitment and best of all no money. No skin in the game. There was the distant threat Google could shut down my blog, but why? They had bigger fish to catch and I followed all the rules. Ha, Crazyville may be a bit off, but it is still a family friendly town.
Early this year, I wanted to really “own” this blog because there are posts that date back to 2013. That action required purchase of my own donation (www.mayorofcrazyville.com) and pay to have it hosted on a reputable server. This was a big step. Big gulps. Pull up my big girl pants.
Buying the domain was super easy. The next step was pure frustration. I read all the websites and videos on how to transfer the site. Ginny Marie from Lemon Drop Pie was kind enough to loan an ebook on the subject. Nothing worked. The hosting site could not pull my old work. Plus, WordPress.com and WordPress.org confused me even further. I was stuck and ready to throw in the proverbial towel. I sheepish confessed maybe this was a bad idea.
One evening Ginny was kind enough to meet at a local coffee-house and straighten me out. She calmed me down and walked though each step. There was one tiny issue that was quickly resolved with more caffeine. By the end of the evening I had a temporary site that worked.
The blog design still has more work. What has been done is:
- Favicon – woo hoo! Check it out.
- Created a logo – big stuff here.
- Installed a theme and customized it.
- Added working social media. Surprisingly super easy.
- Searchable archive folder.
More to come as this blog is a work in progress. I would like to add a customer header and change a few layouts. Plus, I need to forward the old address to my shiny new address.
