On January 16 “Operation Desert Storm” begins in the Persian Gulf. U.S Forces launched a series of air attacks against Iraq that that led to the withdrawal of the Iraqi Army from Kuwait.
In Los Angeles, Rodney King was stopped by the LAPD. Mr. King was asked to get out of his car and lie on the pavement, where he was subsequently beaten by 4 white police officers with nightsticks. The ordeal was captured on video. Ultimately, this event led to the Los Angeles Riots 1992. More on that when ’92 is covered.
Thurgood Marshall, the only black Supreme Justice announces his retirement.
Anita Hill, a professor at the University of Oklahoma, accuses Judge Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment during his U.S. Senate confirmation hearings.
